‘El Ultimo Canto’ by Agustín Barrios

‘El Ultimo Canto’ by Agustín Barrios (Una limosna por el amor de dios: ‘An alm for the love of god’)

One of the last pieces written by Barrios before he died, it is said to be inspired by a beggar woman who would come knocking at his door and sing for money – the opening two bars of music representing the initial knock, followed by the melody of her song. I find it really useful to have an image or story in mind when playing a piece of music so I can give a specific expression to each phrase.

This is a piece I’m reviving as part of study into perfecting my tremolo technique, with the hopes to extend it into less traditional tremolo patterns and uses, as well as other right hand techniques.
